Dinan is a medieval fortress situated upriver from the Rance estuary. The town is still encircled today by an unbroken line of ramparts, the oldest and most extensive in Brittany. The impressive 3-kilometre ring of fortifications comprises a keep and 14 towers and monumental gateways, within which lies an astonishing wealth of architecture protected down through the centuries. The Saint-Sauveur Basilica, Belfry, Cordeliers Convent, Church of Saint-Malo and, in particular, the old quarter with many half-timbered houses are some of the most  important examples of the town’s past.
